Is Ocala a Hurricane free zone? |

|
When I decided to move to Florida in 2004 one of my biggest concerns was hurricanes. In New England we don’t have natural disasters. The fact that Ocala has never suffered a direct hit by a hurricane was a major reason on why I moved here. In 2004 there were several hurricanes and I did experience the remnants in the form of tropical storms. We has huge trees uprooted and power outages but not the kind of devastation you see on TV. I actually didn’t even lose my power.
Most hurricanes seem to either hit the tip of south Florida or head into the Gulf and strike the pan handle. A storm would have to make a really crazy turn and then go over 50 miles of land before hitting Ocala. My conclusion is that hurricanes are possible but unlikely here in Ocala. We are the safest part of the state of Florida.
